Bob Iger’s tallest order at Disney: preparing his own replacement – and letting it rip

Disney CEO Bob Iger, left, has been the company’s chief executive since 2005. But his top job became far more difficult after his daughter reported in November 2012 that she had been sexually assaulted by her former boss, Jeffrey D. Dunn. It is the largest sex abuse incident in U.S. history.

The man who took over as the chief executive of Disney on Thursday was the most powerful executive at the company since the late Laurene Powell Jobs in 1985.

That was his day job as a venture capitalist. He was also a high school teacher and businessman known for his focus on family, charity and philanthropy.

Bob Iger, 48, has managed to keep a low profile throughout his years at Disney, going so far as to make his own schedule of family time public in order to avoid distractions. And he is clearly taking charge now as Disney’s leader, after his daughter reported that her father had repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

Iger’s role as Disney’s chief executive officer is about to become exponentially more fraught. He’ll take over in early 2013 after the departure of Chairman and CEO Robert Iger following his health.

But before that, he will have to replace Iger himself.

A few months ago, Disney announced that Iger’s replacement for the top job would be an “aspirational” yet “individual” who would “bring a fresh perspective.” Those are words that are being written in the same breath as “an outsider.”

Iger will make it his business to make sure he is a “fresh perspective” on a variety of issues including global economics. And that makes his choice of a replacement a little more complicated.
