Hilary Duff mourns ex Aaron Carter: ‘Boy did my teenage self love you deeply’
Hilary Duff says he was “lonely and scared” during his relationship with Aaron Carter.
The former star of ‘My Boy!’ – who died of a drug overdose just months after having his first child with ex-partner Kristin Cavallari – has opened up in a new interview about the tragic ending to his romance.
“I was lonely and scared,” he tells New York magazine. “I thought I wasn’t supposed to be in love, but I did. I wanted to be an actor all my life. I just felt empty, and I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I wanted to marry a princess. I wanted to marry a girl. I was an actor and I wanted to be on TV. I thought ‘I want to be like everybody else’.”
“My heart was pure and I wanted to be there for someone.”
Hilary said he thought about suicide at times, and had “a lot of trouble” coping with his mental illness.
But Hilary was only 14 when the pair started dating in 2007, so he was a bit inexperienced.
“Aaron was 16 when we started dating,” Hilary said. “He would come up to me and pinch my butt, and I’d say, ‘I’m not interested!’ He was 17 and I was 14.
“He was tall, slim, beautiful — he had a great body, and he had a great smile. I was just so lonely and scared, not knowing what to do with myself. I just wanted to be a good friend because I was lonely. I didn’t know what to do.”
“I could take care of myself, I could be independent. I didn’t want someone to take care of me.”
The couple dated for three years before they broke up in 2010.
While the couple split, the 27-year-old Hilary has admitted he would never have married a girl.
And Hilary claims he still thinks of Kristin every day.
“Kristin was my whole world and my heart,” he says,
