Serena and Venus Williams knocked out of doubles’ play by Czech duo at US Open

(CNN) – After winning the women’s doubles titles at the US Open last month and then playing in the doubles final, Serena Williams and Venus Williams were supposed to celebrate on Monday, but when they arrived at the Rod Laver Arena, only the Williams sisters and the Williams family were in attendance.
The Williamses are staying in the US with their mother, Diane and sister Alexis. Following the US Open, they are headed to Tokyo where they are competing in the World Series Finals in September.
“This would’ve been the perfect time for us to go out and celebrate, but there’s a lot of work to do, and she’s trying not to let the media dictate what she’s really feeling. They’ve been very nice to us…they’ve been very nice when they saw us,” Serena Williams said. “Things aren’t going quite to plan for us.”
The Williams sisters have lost three of their past four wins over the two weeks following their US Open victory in Coral Gardens. With Wimbledon and the Olympics in their future, the sisters hope to take advantage of their momentum to complete a Grand Slam and to extend their championships into a calendar year.
Venus Williams missed the last two weeks of action with a minor left knee injury. Serena Williams, who finished the US Open fourth in the world, has won the past three Grand Slams – the French, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and is eight months away from turning 30. Venus Williams, who is 19 years younger, is five months away from turning 21.
