Op-Ed: Independents may not like Biden, but they abhor Trump
In his State of the Union speech last week, President Trump delivered perhaps his most unscripted, unbridled, and off-the-cuff remarks to date. At times, he seemed like a rambling and ranting bovine. But in the end, he didn’t just deliver a speech: He delivered a vision of America unlike any vision that Americans are ever likely to see in their lifetimes.
In the coming weeks, the Democrats will go through their post-SOTU ritual, as they do every year. They will attempt to spin the president’s remarks, to find a line of reasoning and commentary that justifies the radical policies that he’s implemented so far.
But as they will likely realize, there is no justification for the policies he’s proposed. Instead, it’s always a case of “Well, you know, you could say that the president’s just speaking his mind.” And while that analysis has a certain measure of truth, there’s really nothing to back it up.
Let’s start with his immigration policies. These policies are based on the belief that the United States is a rich country that is so diverse that we can absorb people from many different countries. We must do this because they are “losing our way” by not being an open and welcoming people. So we should adopt a policy of welcoming those from other countries, not excluding them, by any means necessary.
Let me be clear. In what follows, I don’t mean that I support the open-borders policies of America’s most prominent presidential contender, Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Not by a long shot, but that’s OK. I think that it’s a fundamentally dumb idea, and I won’t waste your time
