HONOLULU — When police, paramedics and neighbors first arrived on the scene of a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in East L.A. late Monday night, they saw a man. They found a man with a gunshot wound to his chest and an almost empty case of 12-gauge shotgun shells on the ground near the shooter. As police interviewed the suspect, he refused to talk. He sat at the bottom of the stairway that led to the shooting incident’s elevator shaft.

When the suspect heard the police and began walking up the stairs with his hands up, a large, heavily tattooed man who police said was his best friend, approached him. He shot the suspect in the chest and then fired as the two approached the elevator cage.

“We’re gonna get you, motherfucker!” the suspect repeatedly shouted as he fired.

Police say that’s when he turned around and shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

“It happened so fast,” said Miguel Villarreal, the man who was shot dead by his friend.

“He walked past us, like nothing had happened,” said Officer Ron Helus, who responded to a call regarding the early Sunday morning shooting.

“He knew he had to come straight here and tell us what happened,” said Villarreal. “He didn’t have a choice.”

Villarreal, a former chef, and his partner, a former police officer, had been hired to prepare dinner at a restaurant called Nino’s. Just days before they were set to open the restaurant, the couple was toasting to their upcoming nuptials.

On that night in East L.A., at the restaurant, Villarreal was preparing to serve the meal when he was shot.
